1. Super Bowl XXXI
Bill Belichick’s Patriots made their inaugural Super Bowl appearance a memorable one in 1984. Facing off against defending champion St. Louis Rams at the Superdome, victory would make them just the second team ever to win four straight road games during regular season play and remain undefeated as they advanced toward an NFL championship game without dropping one game during regular season play en route to an undefeated regular season record and an undefeated regular season record overall. Also notable in this game was Tom Brady taking over for Drew Bledsoe starting quarterback after taking over for Drew Bledsoe after Week 2. Both teams came into this encounter well prepared; in fact both defenses had strong players while taking turns under center for both Tom Brady after taking over for Drew Bledsoe.
First quarter was fast-paced and highly entertaining. Bledsoe connected with Terry Glenn for a 44-yard touchdown that gave New England a 14-7 edge, before Vinatieri made history by scoring late field goals to seal their win and deliver their inaugural Super Bowl championship win.
Second half play was relatively uneventful, yet the Patriots managed to hold off an underperforming St. Louis offense that had struggled since late in the first quarter. Bledsoe threw another touchdown pass to Glenn while two defensive stops by the Patriots prevented any points being scored by St Louis in the fourth quarter.
Special teams were key in this game and the Patriots took full advantage of them. Cordarrelle Patterson returned a kickoff for a touchdown and Dont’a Hightower blocked a punt that Kyle Van Noy then returned for another score – both plays playing their part in helping the Patriots clinch both their third consecutive AFC East title as well as their twelfth NFL championship overall.
2. Super Bowl XXXII
Super Bowl XXXII will remain an unforgettable memory to those that were there, marking an intense back-and-forth affair that saw two teams with equal regular season records win the Super Bowl for the first time – cementing New England Patriots as a dynasty while giving Denver Broncos hope of breaking an AFC streak of 13 straight wins (John Elway’s Denver team won it all!).
New England struck early, when Drake Maye connected with Efton Chism III on a flea flick for 35 yards. On their next possession, Maye found Corey Dillon open for an 88-yard touchdown run by Maye himself. Miami received another scare when Jack Gibbens fumble was forced and recovered by Elijah Ponder.
Miami made their next drive more interesting with rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers leading them on a 10-play, 65-yard scoring drive that culminated with Malik Washington slipping uncovered into the corner of the end zone for an easy touchdown score on 3rd-and-1 play.
Once again, New England would begin its dominating play, scoring three touchdowns on runs by Rhamondre Stevenson (35 yards rushing touchdown) and TreVeyon Henderson (2nd touchdown run of first half), giving them an 18-10 advantage at halftime.
This was the seventh Super Bowl hosted in Miami area, tied with New Orleans and Los Angeles as host cities overall. Additionally, it remains unique as being the only one to include two first-ballot HOF quarterbacks: Brady and Manning (although that could change with Brees-Roethlisberger/Mahomes/Brady in 2021). Broadcast in over 150 countries around the globe with narration by Harry Kalas.
3. Super Bowl XXXIII
On January 31, 1999, the third Super Bowl between the Dolphins and Patriots was played at Pro Player Stadium (now Hard Rock Stadium) in Miami Gardens, Florida for the inaugural time outside California. Denver Broncos won, defeating Atlanta Falcons 34-19.
The 1985 Super Bowl game was notable as it marked the first meeting between two 11-5 teams and included both having winning home records; additionally, this match-up marked the inaugural overtime result in Super Bowl history. Furthermore, it saw Dolphins use of Wildcat formation which became an effective tactic throughout 1985 season.
At the Super Bowl XXXIII bids award meeting held in Rosemont, Illinois to determine where Super Bowl XXXIII bids would go, initially only considering awarding it to one city (either San Francisco or Miami’s Joe Robbie Stadium) before ultimately opting to award all three host sites instead of awarding just one bid.
Super Bowl XXXIII marked the inaugural game to take place at a retractable-roof facility and also marked the first Super Bowl game played on an unusually cold Florida evening; nonetheless, attendance for this historic match-up came close to reaching record levels.
In the 1990s, their rivalry was intense as both teams boasted outstanding quarterbacks like Dan Marino and Drew Bledsoe who both appeared in Super Bowls during this era. In general though, Dolphins won 13 out of 15 games against Patriots; only exception being during 1998 season where Patriots managed two victories over their division rivals.
4. Super Bowl XXIV
When they defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV, the 49ers became only team since Pittsburgh Steelers in 2001 to capture consecutive National Football League championships in consecutive years since. Joe Montana set eight player and game records during this contest and was honored as Super Bowl MVP; their victory marked one of NFL history’s great dynasties and perhaps its greatest team ever seen on an American field.
The Dolphins and Patriots have met 121 times (including three postseason contests) during regular season play, with the Dolphins holding a narrow edge 57-64 overall in this all-time series. Their rivalry has played an instrumental role in their respective franchise’s success since joining the National Football League in 1966.
The rivalry was reignited during the 1990s when both teams featured legendary quarterbacks Dan Marino and Drew Bledsoe, both appearing in two Super Bowls each. The Dolphins initially dominated early meetings against Patriots by winning 13 out of 15 meetings between 2024-2029; thereafter they split alternating years until finally in 2024 when Dolphins won both games to claim their first regular season sweep since 1985.
5. Super Bowl XXV
In the 1990s, both teams dominated their rivalry – Dan Marino leading the Dolphins and Drew Bledsoe leading the Patriots – but this game marked the first Super Bowl between two teams from one state (even though Giants play their home games in New Jersey). Billed as an all-New York clash, both quarterbacks made multiple Super Bowl appearances; Bledsoe in Super Bowl XXI while Marino in Super Bowl XXV.
On Feb. 4, 1990 – less than one week after conference championship games – the Super Bowl took place in Tampa, Florida, with tight security precautions being implemented due to Gulf War III still taking place at that point. Also featured was prerecorded performance of singer Gloria Estefan who sang both at her conference championship game as well as at Super Bowl XXIV the year before.
As for the game itself, it was an intense defensive showdown. While Bills’ no-huddle offense led the league in scoring, Giants ball control defense allowed only 18 total points total; this lead to both sides struggling to break through into the end zone during second-half action and making for a tight contest that ultimately went to overtime.
At just under one minute to go in the game, the Giants scored on their final drive when Darcy Johnson caught a 2-yard pass and scored for them, giving them a 20-19 win and one of the most dramatic endings ever witnessed in Super Bowl history.
