1. Zay Flowers vs. Lamar Jackson
Lamar Jackson made his triumphant return after three games of absence due to a hamstring injury Thursday, throwing four touchdown passes and helping Baltimore secure a 28-6 win against Miami Dolphins to revive its slim playoff hopes.
Once Jackson returned, Ravens tight ends flourished with Mark Andrews catching both of Jackson’s first-half touchdown passes after struggling in previous games; Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar also found their way into the end zone; in total this trio amassed 102 yards for the evening.
Baltimore’s defense had an early advantage as Alohi Gilman forced a turnover deep within Dolphins territory by stripping Kenyan Drake of the ball and recovering it as a takeaway, giving Baltimore an early 7-0 lead.
Self-inflicted errors hampered the Dolphins late in the first half. After an ineffective drive that featured costly false starts from Larry Borom and Riley Patterson’s missed 35-yard field goal attempt, their next possession resulted in them punting, leading directly to a freebie touchdown for Baltimore.
Out of halftime, the offense quickly found its groove with two quick scoring drives to start the second half, led by Lamar Jackson’s nine successful pass attempts for 95 yards and two scores. Meanwhile, on defense, rookie safety Dante Trader Jr. and linebacker Tyrel Dodson recorded 10 tackles (four solo), three takeaways including Malaki Starks’ and Marlon Humphrey’s recoveries of fumbles each.
2. Derrick Henry vs. Jaylen Waddle
The Ravens made changes to their starting lineup against the Dolphins, and one of their newcomers had an immediate impact. Safety Alohi Gilman forced a fumble on Miami’s opening drive that led directly to Lamar Jackson scoring on wide receiver Mark Andrews for another score. Later, Gilman contributed another takeaway by stripping tight end Malik Washington inside their 1-yard line – both key playmaking plays by either team in winning games against one another.
Derrick Henry started slowly for Baltimore’s run game, garnering three yards on his initial four attempts before surpassing 100 total yards for 119 total on the day – well on his way to becoming one of the eight most valuable fantasy running backs again this season.
Dolphins offensive issues continued to plague them after Riley Patterson kicked a 25-yard field goal on their second drive; their next two drives resulted in three-and-outs before Malik Washington fumbled at Baltimore 29-yard line and caused further trouble for them.
Defense was also inconsistent at times and were exposed on multiple big plays, yet their only bright spot came from defensive tackle Benito Jones’ strong performance, who made history by recording his first sack since 2024! Additionally, tight end Jaylen Waddle served as a reliable target for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with six receptions for 82 yards – providing solid fantasy touchdown prospects for leagues using receiving touchdown scoring systems.
3. Jordyn Brooks vs. Rasul Douglas
Assuming they had not expected it when signing Douglas to a one-year contract in August, the Dolphins certainly weren’t expecting him to perform at Pro Bowl level – yet that is exactly what has occurred. According to Pro Football Focus’ rankings of full-time starting cornerbacks in 2018, Douglas ranks third overall with 78.5 grade score outstripping Cincinnati’s Creed Humphrey by over three grades!
Douglas was instrumental in helping the Dolphins hold off a late Jets rally and win an important game on Sunday night. His interception was one of the key plays, while he also registered five passes defensed–an unprecedented achievement since 2020! On Wednesday he received AFC Defensive Player of the Week recognition–just further evidence that this team is coming together.
As a result of their four-game win streak and top scoring defense ranking, the Dolphins have become closer as a unit due to chemistry among their players; something which is especially helpful given that there are so many newcomers within their ranks.
The team chemistry can also be seen by the way players support one another. When Tyrel Dodson intercepted a pass against the Jets, Brooks immediately rallied his teammates around him and began chanting “Tyrel Dodson” and later, for linebacker Ifeatu Melifonwu (“Iffy Mel”).
This Dolphins team is very entertaining to watch due to their energy and sense of teamwork. Everyone wants each other’s success and this creates a really positive atmosphere both inside the locker room and on the field, something we haven’t witnessed for quite some time from this group of Dolphins.
4. Alohi Gilman vs. Jaylen Brown
After losing tight end Isaiah Likely to free agency and suffering Jeremy Maclin’s hamstring injury, Baltimore looked for help at tight end. They found it in Sadiq Cook. This 2022 rookie has the athleticism and skillset needed to become an essential piece in Baltimore’s offense.
At Thursday night’s matchup against the Ravens, Dolphins missteps were the main issue for them. Malik Washington fumbling the ball inside his own 20-yard line was particularly costly while Riley Patterson’s missed field goal attempt in the second quarter stood out as major contributors to their failure.
Odafe Oweh was traded to the Chargers in exchange for Gilman. With Marlon Humphrey and Kyle Hamilton nursing injuries, this former Eagles safety is an ideal replacement for them in the secondary. He should start immediately alongside first-round rookie Malaki Starks; with Drue Tranquil out due to an illness he could even see some time at cornerback. Gilman’s arrival is another sign that their defense is being revamped.
5. Jordyn Brooks vs. Marshal Yanda
Jordyn Brooks will likely find himself up against one of the NFL’s finest guards this season in Marshal Yanda or another defender, regardless of their respective matches-ups. Yanda has not allowed a single sack over his last two seasons while also serving as an elite run blocker – both qualities will play an essential role in revitalizing Baltimore’s revamped run game this year; it will be interesting to observe how he handles Roethlisberger’s potency against his pass rush.
Last season, the Steelers’ pass-rush presented an immense obstacle for the Ravens. Their front seven was packed with powerful defenders who could force Ravens offensive weapons out of play and sap their energy. But with Bryant McKinnie joining their line this year, this will become much harder for them. This move also enables Michael Oher to return to his more natural position of left tackle while Yanda can play his ideal spot RT instead.
Yanda has been an integral member of the Ravens for 12 seasons, earning Pro Bowl selection every season since 2010. They would love to have him back next season and it would be fantastic for their franchise to have him there long term.
The opening game of any season can be an enormously crucial one. When that opponent is your hated rival, the stakes become even greater. Although this year’s Ravens roster may look different than last, that doesn’t mean they don’t stand a good chance to come away victorious; all they must do is do their best and hope the result goes their way!
