1. 1981 AFC Championship Game
In 1981, the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets met twice for an AFC Championship Game that would go down as one of the greatest moments in franchise history. Mark Ingram famously faked out defensive backs by falsifying a spike to stop the clock; their defensive backs became confused and allowed Ingram to gain first down and score the winning touchdown – one of several memorable plays of that game that gave Miami its only AFC championship title victory and gave Mark one of its most memorable moments ever! It remains one of Miami’s greatest triumphs!
Dan Marino led the Dolphins to an early 24-14 halftime advantage before Ken O’Brien rallied them with two touchdown passes to wide receivers Mickey Shuler and Wesley Walker for a comeback by throwing two more touchdown passes during the fourth quarter.
In 1992’s regular season finale – a winner-take-all contest for the last wild card playoff spot – these teams met once more. In the second quarter, quarterback Trent Dilfer connected with tight end Justin Peelle for an 1-yard touchdown pass. But after an 11-play, 67-yard drive led by fullback Heath Evans that culminated with kicker Mike Nugent kicking a 23-yard field goal, it was all but decided. Additionally, Harvey Keitel played the part of Satan attempting to convince Marino (Harvey Keitel) to sell his soul for one last chance Super Bowl victory; ultimately he declined and instead chose victory instead.
2. 1986 AFC Championship Game
The Dolphins and Jets have long been arch rivals. Both teams occupy AFC East divisions and each play two games against one another each season. Over their long histories, these rivals have produced some memorable contests; following AFL-NFL merger, Dolphins became one of the NFL’s premier franchises, winning back-to-back Super Bowl championships between 1972 and 1973; however until late in their existence when Jets started competing with Dolphins for division supremacy.
The 1986 AFC Championship Game was an instant classic. A defensive battle, featuring ten turnovers (eight of which were quarterback interceptions). Both teams scored in the second half; final score: 34-13 Dolphins victory that propelled them all the way to Super Bowl VI.

3. 1989 AFC Championship Game
At the AFC Championship Game between these bitter rivals – their inaugural meeting in an AFC title game – the intensity was sky-high. Both squads topped their respective divisions and victory would send one to Super Bowl XVII; fans of both sides put on an epic show that will long be remembered by viewers of New York Jets football games.
First half of this game saw both sides have opportunities to score but defenses held firm. But in the third quarter things changed dramatically when Dan Marino led an amazing drive for Miami that tied it. Marino managed to drive down field before eventually tying with thirty seconds remaining using one of his classic fake spike plays by throwing Mark Ingram the ball instead of kneeling down for it – known as the Fake Spike Game by many fans today. This play would go on to end their season.
In the fourth quarter, the Jets made an unsuccessful last ditch effort. On 4th and goal at their 29, Jeff Graham caught a touchdown pass to bring them within one point and tie up the game at 45 after two-point conversion. In overtime, however, Pat O’Brien hit Wesley Walker with a long pass for an easy victory that sealed it all for them.
It was an exciting matchup between these rivals in the final game of 1991 NFL season, as both were determined to earn one wild card spot in the playoffs and determine their wild card berth. Following an intense back-and-forth, regulation concluded tied 20-17 before Raul Allegre kicked a 44-yard field goal that propelled New York Jets over Raiders for an overtime win and their ticket into playoffs.
4. 1990 AFC Championship Game
The Dolphins and Jets meet twice each season as division rivals and have long held heated rivalries against one another, producing numerous classic games over time. Their clashes became particularly heated during the late 1960s and 70s as both sides competed for AFL supremacy; two separate AFC Championship Games between these teams saw both wins go to Miami Dolphins.
On a sloppy Orange Bowl field after a storm rolled through just before kickoff, this game saw 10 turnovers and five interceptions by both teams. Despite the poor conditions, however, the contest was an exciting defensive battle – Dolphins linebacker AJ Duhe managed to pick off Jets quarterback Richard Todd three times while returning one interception for a touchdown return; quarterback Dan Marino completed 23 of 34 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns en route to leading them to their only AFC Championship Game win in franchise history. This victory helped secure their playoff berth, while marking their only AFC Championship Game victory ever in franchise history.
Adam Sandler’s comedy Little Nicky depicts Marino (played by himself) visiting Hell and trying to convince the Devil (Harvey Keitel) to offer him a Super Bowl victory as payment for his soul, only for this offer to be declined because Joe Namath received it first; thus leaving Marino too nice of a guy for such an offer.
After losing to the New England Patriots in Week 16 for an AFC East lead, Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino led his team back from a 24-14 deficit to take a 27-24 advantage with just over 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
