India were odds on at 50-1 to make it all the way to Lord’s, defeating an all-star West Indies side composed of Gordon Greenidge, Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards and Malcolm Marshall among others.

India began by winning an impressive 107-run victory against New Zealand, spearheaded by Sunil Gavaskar’s century and Kapil Dev’s fine bowling performance. Wisden described it as one of the “greatest upsets ever witnessed.”

Indian cricket had experienced nothing but defeat prior to this game and this victory, though not necessarily unprecedented, gave their confidence a massive boost and began their remarkable turnaround as national side.
