1. 2021 Qualifier 1

CSK have recorded an amazing comeback to snap their six-match losing streak at Chepauk and deliver an emphatic win at Chepauk. KL Rahul scored an outstanding 92 to help anchor their chase, while Anshul Kamboj and Jamie Overton especially were outstanding with four wickets each taking place – Overton even taking four-fers!

Overton’s second over begins with a full-toss that carried to the long-on boundary and scored four runs, followed by another short ball from which Sameer Rizvi pulled but missed, leading Gurjapneet Singh to make an amazing diving catch at backward point – one which reminds everyone why he moved from Ludhiana and Ambala to Chennai.

2. 2022 Qualifier 2

Due to pandemic concerns, the knockout phase that would normally start in September 2021 was postponed one year and now started with this match between two teams who have met twice this season including league play-off matches; its winner will secure their place in the final.

Chennai posted an impressive total of 169 with MS Dhoni and Faf du Plessis both making half centuries to set them up as they batted first. Delhi were then stunned by Chennai’s bowlers and lost top order early during their chase, Mahela Jayawardene’s half century coming too late as DC suffered an embarrassing 86 run defeat – this being their worst loss ever in an Eliminator format! This marked DC’s first-ever defeat by over 75 runs.

3. 2023 Qualifier 1

Qualifier matches between CSK and DC always produce excitement, with the winner making their mark and going onto play the final of IPL 2023 as well as qualifying for the 2023 ODI World Cup which takes place October-November. On 10 May there was no exception.

At an excellent batting track, Chennai batted first and posted an impressive total of 169 runs led by Michael Hussey’s half century and MS Dhoni’s quickfire 44. Chasing on such an easy surface should have been straightforward for Delhi; instead they collapsed for just 83 runs giving CSK an 86-run win.

Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja and Deepak Chahar all took two wickets each for CSK, with Harshal Patel, Rishabh Pant and Mahela Jayawardene fighting back with decent contributions, but all was in vain as Albie Morkel could not hit a boundary off the last ball and gave CSK another win; their fourth in five against Delhi since IPL history began.

4. 2024 Qualifier 2

CSK easily defeated Delhi in their final Qualifer stage match at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam. CSK were favourites coming into this match having defeated them twice already this season in both league matches.

MS Dhoni produced a sensational innings off just 58 balls to help CSK reach 223/7. Chasing that target, Delhi never got going and Mahela Jayawardene’s half century proved futile as they eventually fell by an innings-and-86-run scoreline to CSK; marking Delhi’s lowest ever total against CSK.

5. 2025 Qualifier 1

Delhi Capitals knew they needed to win this 2025 qualifier match to stay alive in playoff contention, and began well with some excellent batting from Pathum Nissanka and Tristan Stubbs, before losing wickets regularly against CSK bowlers, led by Jamie Overton and Gurjapneet Singh who provided excellent spin bowling performances.

Overton delivered a good length ball, which was straight but packed enough pace to outwit David Miller and leave his leg stump untouched, giving him out in an lbw decision.

Gurjapneet Singh delivered another effective over. While Tristan Stubbs struggled against him, Tristan Stubbs kept the chase alive by hitting two fours off him; with some further big hits from Tristan Stubbs and he will hit 50 runs within 30 balls!

Sarfaraz Khan made an excellent catch at backward point! While both batsmen attempted to cut hard shots, Sarfaraz dived and caught the ball perfectly, saving a sure-fire six for Delhi and saving his team’s victory!

DC requires 42 runs in 18 balls – no easy task for their batsmen! But playing smart will help DC. Delhi batsmen often make mistakes such as betting against specialist bowlers such as Kuldeep Yadav in an effort to score two off them more often; but this error will cost them dearly in the long run; more discipline would have proven invaluable here; they must learn quickly if they wish to remain competitive in this tournament and avoid falling out of playoff contention!
