England recovered from their poor start through hard work and sheer luck. Harry Brook and Jamie Overton spearheaded England’s comeback, adding 68 runs between them at second wicket – more than all the top three combined! Sam Curran and Brydon Carse were key in keeping England in contention but it wasn’t enough to prevent New Zealand from reaching a modest target.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to field. England’s openers made an encouraging start, only for two quick wickets to fall in their powerplay and put England in trouble. Luckily, Zak Foulkes and Blair Tickner eased some pressure off by picking up several wickets in the last over to ensure England would not collapse as in Game 1.
New Zealand bowlers were truly impressive and the team’s batting performance simply was not good enough. They managed to get the ball spinning effectively after having difficulty doing so in the previous match; additionally they took full advantage of the short pitch to create plenty of run scoring opportunities that they utilized effectively.
New Zealand made it too easy for themselves to win and complete a series win against England, taking all three matches of this series without being defeated, unbeaten overall in one-day international history and five of six victories against them since 2010.
New Zealand will have an action-packed summer with games against Australia, South Africa, and England scheduled. They will play eight one-day internationals and four Twenty20s this summer with Eden Park being chosen as their venue for final. New Zealand have an excellent track record against this tournament having won it twice: in 2008 and 2013. Previously they defeated Pakistan twice during Champions Trophy finals before beating India once at Cricket World Cup final in 2011. They look set to continue dominating these competitions over the coming years.
England vs New Zealand Test Series
New Zealand and England will face each other in three Test matches during a thrilling summer of cricket, held at Lord’s, Kia Oval and Trent Bridge respectively. Each series will vie for the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy which honors New Zealand legend Martin Crowe and England great Graham Thorpe.
On December 1, the inaugural Test match will commence. Kane Williamson looks poised to become only the second Black Caps player ever to reach 9000 Test runs, while England wicketkeeper Joe Root aims for a century in his 150th game for his nation. Meanwhile, James Carse could make his international bow and take an expected hat-trick upon debut.
Harry Brook will attempt to surpass his own record of most first-class runs scored during a Test match by the end of this match, with Jacks, Pott and Woakes likely returning from retirement as players from both teams return. Ollie Robinson from Durham will make his first appearance for England since replacing Jordan Cox due to the birth of his child – making this match historic indeed!
England vs New Zealand T20 Series
England and their inexperienced captain, Harry Brook, may believe they have finally regained their T20 form, while New Zealand and Mitchell Santner would say otherwise. Of course, weather plays an integral part here; should Auckland turn into a muddy slugfest tonight it would likely give England the series win.
But that doesn’t make things any simpler – even minor rain showers could wreak havoc with the pitch, making it harder for either team to bowl with conviction. New Zealand will also begin an intense home season against Australia, England, and West Indies this week; after dominating T20 World Cup group stage opponents such as Scotland, Ireland and Nepal before defeating them convincingly, the Black Caps look confident that they can claim another major scalp tonight as Shai Hope guides his side expertly.
England vs New Zealand T20I Series
England will take part in three T20 matches and five ODIs against New Zealand this summer, marking their first limited-overs tour since 2018. All matches in this series will take place within New Zealand with two T20Is taking place at Hagley Oval in Christchurch while Eden Park in Auckland hosts all remaining ones; live coverage can be found across Sony Sports Network channels as well as Fancode/SonLiv websites/apps in India.
Sam Curran and Liam Dawson have been included back into England’s Twenty20I squad, while Lancashire pacer Luke Wood remains. However, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, and Ben Duckett will miss these T20Is due to workload management considerations.
On Saturday, Hagley Oval in Christchurch will host the opening T20I and tickets are now on sale! Additionally, tickets for other fixtures in both T20I and ODI series should be released soon – make sure to follow us on social media for updates!
