In 2022, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won their maiden IPL crown by defeating Mumbai Indians in the final match and becoming the first team ever to win 100 T20 matches; breaking a record held by Mumbai for over three years. Two seasons later when these teams met again during Qualifier 2 Round playoffs playoffs and Mumbai prevailed by 34 runs.
At the IPL auction held in December 2022, KKR purchased seven new players at auction – Pakistan bowler Mohammad Nabi for Rs2.5 crore; England all-rounder Alex Hales cost them Rs1.5 crore while Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batsman Anukul Roy from Jharkhand cost them another two crore rupees. Furthermore they re-signed South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje as well as English duo Harry Gurney and Joe Denly (at their base prices) before trading 11 players away and trading for two new players at auction Prithvi Raj Yarra and Shrikant Mundhe.
